The European Parliament has released this week the figures on women and men elected to the new European Parliament. Only 275 women of the 785 Members of the European Parliament will represented the 495 million citizens of the European Union (27 countries).
Gender equality in all areas of life is a fundamental right and value of the European Union, enshrined in policy since the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Yet more than fifty years on, women still fail to play an equal role in politics across Europe ... Women clearly do not have the share of political positions that should be expected if they had free and equal access to power.
From the first results we can observe that the elections of June 2009 led to slight progresses in the representation of women in the European Parliament, which now reaches about 35% of women (compared with the stagnation of the last 10 years when about 31% were elected during the 1999-2004 and 2004-20009 terms). With these results the EP still doesn’t reach parity or even the 40% of women threshold agreed by Member States of the Council of Europe in 2004 (45 European countries).
In these elections 16 EU Member States saw a rise in the proportion of elected female MEP's, 8 countries a decline and 3 countries maintained more or less the same percentage as before.
The EWL Campaign
The EWL 50/50 Campaign is now focusing on actions aiming at improving the representation of women in internal decision-making posts within the European Parliament (president, vice-presidents, (vice)-chairing of committees etc) and in the European Commission.
For this purpose model lobbying letters have been drafted and can be found on the 50/50 Campaign website http://www.5050democracy.eu. This material is at the disposal of Internet users to be translated/ adapted and sent as soon as possible to national governments / political parties to influence decisions regarding nominations and political negotiations which are taking place right now
Next steps
For now the names that are advanced for the Presidency of the parliament are those of the two male leaders of major parties who currently sit.
There are rumours that the two largest groups in Parliament, the EPP-ED and PES, have already agreed to share the post of President of the European Parliament as they have done for all but two terms of Parliament. The first half of the term would be taken by Jerzy Buzek MEP of the EPP (who would be the first person from Eastern Europe to hold the post), who would then pass it over to Martin Schulz MEP, the current leader of PES. Other candidates for these posts are Graham Watson, the leader of ALDE and it was reported that Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi wanted the EPP's candidate to instead be Mario Mauro MEP of his party rather than Buzek.
At the EU summit on Friday 19 June, EU leaders agreed to renew the conservative José Barroso, Portuguese and current President of the Commission to renew its mandate with a second term.
In autumn, this will be the position of Secretary General of the Council of the EU held by Javier Solana (Spain) which should also be renewed and finally if the Lisbon treaty is ratified there would be a seat more to fulfill.
The difficult/ impossible struggling for an 2009-2014 Europe led by 50 % female leaders and other people who are not white + male.

G D U S – GENDER, DIVERSITY AND URBAN SUSTAINABILITY
What is GDUS?GDUS is an informal network of scholars and practitioners in urban planning. Its aim is to bring together work carried out relating to gender and diversity issues to urban studies and planning theory.
GDUS represents different disciplines such as spatial planning, urban design, environmental psychology, landscape planning and social policy within the field of sustainable spatial development.
Each member brings in experience of either research or practice in a gender aware approach.
The network operates through a virtual community hosted by Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Tours (Fr) and through half-yearly seminars.
Objectives of the GDUS-network
establishing and expanding a network of people actively involved in “Gender, Diversity and Urban Sustainability”
presenting studies performed in various European countries on initiatives against gender discrimination in spatial policies regarding public space, housing, mobility and environmental sustainability.
evaluating existing practices and highlighting key factors that can be reproduced in other sites.
exchanging this knowledge with practitioners, policy makers and citizens groups.
constructing a theoretical framework that allows integration of gender-insights into spatial planning systems and theory.
promoting gender and diversity issues in spatial development at all levels of policy making: from EU level (ESDP, SDS, research and development Programs) to regional, urban and local level.

Mayor presencia femenina daría un nuevo estilo a la política
Sí a una mayor presencia femenina pero no a las cuotas. Esa fue una de las conclusiones del Eurobarómetro sobre mujeres y elecciones europeas presentado durante el seminario del mismo título para periodistas que tuvo lugar en el Parlamento Europeo el 4 de marzo. El estudio ofrece asimismo otros datos relevantes, como que el 46 por ciento de las europeas piensa que sus intereses no están bien representados en la Unión Europea.
"Una democracia que no hace hueco suficiente en el proceso de toma de decisiones al 52 por ciento de su población no es ni mucho menos una democracia real", subrayó durante el seminario la vicepresidenta de la Comisión Europea Margot Wallström.
Control masculino
Algo parecido opinan siete de cada diez hombres y casi ocho de cada diez mujeres europeos, que consideran que la escena política está controlada por ellos. Además, para el 76 por ciento de los hombres y el 83 por ciento de las mujeres, una mayor presencia femenina imprimiría un nuevo estilo a la forma de hacer política.
Un buen ejemplo de ello podría encontrarse en los datos del Eurobarómetro hecho público durante la reunión, según los cuales al votar en las elecciones europeas las mujeres dan más importancia a la experiencia comunitaria de los candidatos que a su orientación política (62 por ciento frente a 51 por ciento), mientras que los hombres valoran por igual ambos aspectos (57 y 55 por ciento).
Igualdad
La igualdad de género ocupa una posición central en las expectativas de las mujeres, según el Eurobarómetro. Igualdad en dos sentidos: familiar y social. Así, reclaman que los años dedicados al cuidado de los hijos sean contabilizados a efectos del cálculo de la pensión, y que se facilite un número adecuado de plazas de guardería, pero también que se promueva la igualdad salarial entre hombres y mujeres, que se luche contra la violencia de género y que se ponga freno al tráfico de mujeres.
Cuotas
Sin embargo, sólo una de cada diez se muestra partidaria del establecimiento de cuotas obligatorias de presencia femenina en las listas electorales; en su lugar, más de la mitad aboga por que se anime a las mujeres a embarcarse en política.
Para la vicepresidenta del Parlamento Europeo y eurodiputada socialista griega Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou, el estudio ofrece "elementos importantes sobre las votantes, como sus expectativas, la imagen que tienen de la Unión Europea, sus prioridades políticas para la campaña electoral o su participación en la política comunitaria".

La casa E 1027 (EN) de Eileen Gray (ES) en el sur de Francia se convirtió en su obsesión. "Históricamente no se reconoció la autoría de Gray y sí la de Le Corbusier. Llegó a atribuirse a Badovici, el cliente. Todo antes de contar la verdad". Lo que sucedió en literatura, mujeres que escribían los textos de sus maridos, ocurrió también entre las arquitectas. "El escocés Charles R. Mackintosh se pasó la vida asegurando que el genio era su mujer, Margaret McDonald. Pero nadie lo creyó". "Los medios quieren ver una figura única y preferentemente masculina. No pasa sólo con las mujeres. Sucede también con los equipos. Carme Pinós fue fundamental en la arquitectura de Enric Miralles. Hay un cambio cuando se separan. Luego Benedetta Tagliabue, su segunda mujer-socia, introdujo el color. Se preocupó del usuario. Todo eso no se reconoce". ¿Las parejas de arquitectos se anulan? "No sucede lo mismo con las parejas de hombres". Y explica su teoría: "La arquitectura está basada en la idea del genio único cuando, en realidad, es colaboración, como el cine: todos deberían salir en los créditos".Esta conferencia es la historia de una obsesión, La obsesión de Le Corbusier con una casa de Eileen Gray, pero también la historia de mi propia obsesión con esa historia, con esa obsesión. La obsesión con una obsesión entonces, que en mi caso se remonta al menos 16 anos, al verano de 1992. Hace poco volví de nuevo a la Fondation Le Corbusier en Paris a excavar un poco mas profundamente en los archivos. Me gustaría hacer una película, un documental sobre esta historia. Quizás hubo quien pensara con el primer articulo que escribí sobre esta casa que yo estaba exagerando mi lectura de esta historia. No me importa exagerar. Pero lo que descubrí en los archivos demuestra que en lugar de exagerar me había quedado corta. Mientras tanto, para aquellos que no conozcan la historia voy a empezar por el principio.
