Las mujeres sufren "desproporcionadamente" las consecuencias del cambio climático, pero hasta la fecha han sido ignoradas en los debates sobre la forma de afrontar problemas tales como el aumento del nivel del mar, las sequías, la fusión de los glaciares y las temperaturas extremas, según concluye el informe sobre el 'Estado de la Población Mundial 2009' publicado por el Fondo de Población de Naciones Unidas (UNFPA).

Una veintena de eurodiputadas vestidas con traje y corbata se concentraron este miércoles ante la sede del Consejo Europeo en Bruselas para presentar sus currículos y exigir a los Veintisiete una mayor presencia femenina en los puestos de poder de la Unión. Mañana los líderes de la UE se reúnen en ese mismo edificio para decidir quiénes serán los próximos presidente permanente y alto representante de la UE, respectivamente, y para los que apenas suenan nombres de mujer.

Una veintena de eurodiputadas vestidas con traje y corbata se concentraron este miércoles ante la sede del Consejo Europeo en Bruselas para presentar sus currículos y exigir a los Veintisiete una mayor presencia femenina en los puestos de poder de la Unión. Mañana los líderes de la UE se reúnen en ese mismo edificio para decidir quiénes serán los próximos presidente permanente y alto representante de la UE, respectivamente, y para los que apenas suenan nombres de mujer.
Con esta acción continuaron las llamadas de atención contra la falta de paridad entre los altos cargos que dirigen las instituciones europeas, después de que ayer amenazaran al presidente de la Comisión Europea, José Manuel Durao Barroso, con vetar a su nuevo Ejecutivo si reduce el número de comisarias.
El equipo actual de Barroso cuenta con ocho mujeres, pero para su nueva Comisión apenas se barajan entre tres y cuatro candidaturas femeninas para ocupar alguna de las carteras.
Entre las manifestantes sólo había una representante española, la portavoz del Bloque Nacionalista Galego, Ana Miranda, que no tendrá escaño hasta 2011, cuando releve al miembro de Esquerra Republicana Oriol Junqueras en el puesto que comparten ERC, BNG y Aralar. Miranda lamentó que la UE "propulse la igualdad, pero no predique con el ejemplo en sus propias instituciones".
"Es una llamada de atención sobre la escasa presencia de mujeres dirigiendo o en la cara visible de la UE", dijo Miranda al recordar que sólo 257 de los 736 escaños de la Eurocámara están ocupados por mujeres y que únicamente tres gobiernos han confirmado a mujeres para formar la nueva Comisión.
La portavoz gallega admitió que será "difícil" tumbar un Ejecutivo comunitario que no cumpliera las expectativas de igualdad si estas eurodiputadas no recaban más apoyos entre los hombres de sus familias políticas y sin las mujeres del Partido Popular Europea no se suman a su reivindicación. Las 'populares' no han dado su apoyo formal a esta plataforma, aunque alguna de sus diputadas sí acudió a título individual al acto de este miércoles.
Por su parte, la eurodiputada alemana verde Rebeca Harms instó a Barroso a "tomar en serio" las exigencias de las mujeres y criticó la falta de transparencia en el seno del Consejo para designar los puestos de presidente permanente y jefe de la diplomacia europea. La reunión de mañana es a su juicio un "mal ejemplo", ya que "decidir todo a puerta cerrada no es la manera de incluir los intereses de la ciudadanía en la política europea".
"La igualdad de derechos significa que las mujeres tengan el derecho a ocupar tantos puestos de liderazgo en la UE como tienen los hombres", insistió Harms. Para ello reclamó a los gobiernos europeos que presenten a Barroso "dos o tres nombres" por país, incluyendo hombres y mujeres, para que el presidente de la Comisión cuente "con la posibilidad real de elegir".
En la misma línea se pronunció la liberal británica Diana Wallis, para quien es necesario que los dos puestos que están por confirmar para dirigir la UE se concedan a mujeres, habida cuenta de que tanto la presidencia de la Comisión Europea como la de la Eurocámara están ya en manos de hombres.
Finalmente la francesa Pervenche Berès, del grupo de los socialistas en el Parlamento Europeo, apuntó que "una sociedad democrática es también una sociedad en la que las mujeres desempeñan funciones de responsabilidad".
Barroso dijo la semana pasada que no podría nombrar a más mujeres si los Estados miembros no las presentan como candidatas, pasando así el balón al tejado de los gobiernos europeos. En opinión de Berès esta reclamación no es excusa y el conservador portugués debería "actuar con responsabilidad" y "rechazar" las propuestas de los Veintisiete si no recibe al menos ocho nombres de mujeres.
El éxito de la demanda de estas eurodiputadas dependerá en gran medida de la "fuerza" de su propia estrategia, por lo que confió en que las representantes femeninas del PPE "entiendan" que necesitan su apoyo.

Esto no es un solar - Bruselas

Presento un ejemplo de ocupacion temporal de un solar en el entorno urbano en Bruselas.
El terreno Prowinko , avenue de la Toison d'or 26-30 en Ixelles. El proyecto de Prowinko había seguido una gran saga llamada Heron city.
En este terreno estaba prevista una promoción inmobiliaria tipica de los barrios comerciales de una capital europea. Llegaron incluso a empezar las fundaciones pero la operación fue parada por reclamaciones de los vecinos. Desde entonces el terreno ha sifdo ocupado en varias ocasiones .
En 2006 tuvó lugar el noveno festival "PleinOPENair" de nova-cine que tenía por tema la vivienda y el habitat.
En 2007, primera utilización con apoyo del ayuntamiento fue una escultura de Arne Quinze que se quedó durante 18 meses, sucedió un "parking sauvage", que fue reemplazado por unos Conejos gigantescos de color naranja de Cracking group que se movían de un lado a otro a diario y finalmente en junio de 2009 empezaron a construirse unas puertas con libros que "nacen" y "crecen". Hoy, son siete puertas. Ah, me olvidaba, también se ha visto una pista patinaje en navidad, parasoles, fiestas varias, algunas con mucho ruido y música electrónica repetitiva en bucle....http://www.lalibre.be/actu/bruxelles/article/436894/arau-cityscape-est-illegal.html

One hundred years ago women (and some men) were not allowed to vote.
This exhibition charts the long struggle to win the vote which was eventually granted to all women in 1928. At the height of the campaign to win the vote, a grand historical pageant was held in Edinburgh in October 1909. A re-enactment will take place on 10 October 2009 and this exhibition is being staged to complement this event.
The exhibition will examine the Women's Suffrage Movement in Edinburgh and will include photos and artefacts from that period.

The European Parliament has released this week the figures on women and men elected to the new European Parliament. Only 275 women of the 785 Members of the European Parliament will represented the 495 million citizens of the European Union (27 countries).
Gender equality in all areas of life is a fundamental right and value of the European Union, enshrined in policy since the Treaty of Rome in 1957. Yet more than fifty years on, women still fail to play an equal role in politics across Europe ... Women clearly do not have the share of political positions that should be expected if they had free and equal access to power.
From the first results we can observe that the elections of June 2009 led to slight progresses in the representation of women in the European Parliament, which now reaches about 35% of women (compared with the stagnation of the last 10 years when about 31% were elected during the 1999-2004 and 2004-20009 terms). With these results the EP still doesn’t reach parity or even the 40% of women threshold agreed by Member States of the Council of Europe in 2004 (45 European countries).
In these elections 16 EU Member States saw a rise in the proportion of elected female MEP's, 8 countries a decline and 3 countries maintained more or less the same percentage as before.
The EWL Campaign
The EWL 50/50 Campaign is now focusing on actions aiming at improving the representation of women in internal decision-making posts within the European Parliament (president, vice-presidents, (vice)-chairing of committees etc) and in the European Commission.
For this purpose model lobbying letters have been drafted and can be found on the 50/50 Campaign website http://www.5050democracy.eu. This material is at the disposal of Internet users to be translated/ adapted and sent as soon as possible to national governments / political parties to influence decisions regarding nominations and political negotiations which are taking place right now
Next steps
For now the names that are advanced for the Presidency of the parliament are those of the two male leaders of major parties who currently sit.
There are rumours that the two largest groups in Parliament, the EPP-ED and PES, have already agreed to share the post of President of the European Parliament as they have done for all but two terms of Parliament. The first half of the term would be taken by Jerzy Buzek MEP of the EPP (who would be the first person from Eastern Europe to hold the post), who would then pass it over to Martin Schulz MEP, the current leader of PES. Other candidates for these posts are Graham Watson, the leader of ALDE and it was reported that Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi wanted the EPP's candidate to instead be Mario Mauro MEP of his party rather than Buzek.
At the EU summit on Friday 19 June, EU leaders agreed to renew the conservative José Barroso, Portuguese and current President of the Commission to renew its mandate with a second term.
In autumn, this will be the position of Secretary General of the Council of the EU held by Javier Solana (Spain) which should also be renewed and finally if the Lisbon treaty is ratified there would be a seat more to fulfill.
The difficult/ impossible struggling for an 2009-2014 Europe led by 50 % female leaders and other people who are not white + male.

What is GDUS?
GDUS is an informal network of scholars and practitioners in urban planning. Its aim is to bring together work carried out relating to gender and diversity issues to urban studies and planning theory.
GDUS represents different disciplines such as spatial planning, urban design, environmental psychology, landscape planning and social policy within the field of sustainable spatial development.
Each member brings in experience of either research or practice in a gender aware approach.
The network operates through a virtual community hosted by Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Tours (Fr) and through half-yearly seminars.
Objectives of the GDUS-network
establishing and expanding a network of people actively involved in “Gender, Diversity and Urban Sustainability”
presenting studies performed in various European countries on initiatives against gender discrimination in spatial policies regarding public space, housing, mobility and environmental sustainability.
evaluating existing practices and highlighting key factors that can be reproduced in other sites.
exchanging this knowledge with practitioners, policy makers and citizens groups.
constructing a theoretical framework that allows integration of gender-insights into spatial planning systems and theory.
promoting gender and diversity issues in spatial development at all levels of policy making: from EU level (ESDP, SDS, research and development Programs) to regional, urban and local level.
